Best Ways to Mitigate Fire Risks
8/15/2022 (Permalink)
Home fires are common—more common than you may realize. The modern home has many fire risks, with everything from cooking equipment to electrical malfunctions as a possible cause of residential fires.
How do you mitigate the risk of a fire? Even if a fire does start, there are precautions you can take today that will help keep it from blazing out of control. At SERVPRO of East York, we want to share our best tips, so you can stop a fire early and even avoid fire risks in the first place.
1) Test your smoke alarms regularly
Your smoke alarms are your first line of defense against fires. A modern smoke detector doesn’t just ring loudly like the ones of yesteryear—it’s wired to send alerts to your smart devices, too.
That means a smoke detector can alert you to a house fire even if you’re not at home, so long as you have your smartphone on you. However, that can only happen if the smoke alarms are functioning. You should test them once every six months to ensure they’re working properly.
Here’s how you test a smoke detector: Simply press a button built into the alarm. If the beep is weak, you should change the batteries ASAP. (Modern smoke alarms can even send an alert to your smartphone when it’s time for a battery change, so you won’t have to guess.)
2) Clean your stove and oven and pay attention when cooking
Cooking is one of the most common sources of house fires. It only takes a few seconds for something in the kitchen to catch fire if something goes wrong. You should never leave your cooking unattended.
That’s not just the oven and stove—it’s any cooking device, from a slow cooker (be sure you’re at home when you’re using it) to an outdoor grill (be sure to keep it at a safe distance from your home).
While we’re at it, be sure to wipe down your stovetop after every use to remove food particles. You’ll want to regularly clean the buildup in your oven, too.
3) Invest in a fire extinguisher
Every home should have at least one fire extinguisher. (Bonus points if you have a fire extinguisher for each floor.) Make sure your extinguishers are placed in easily accessible areas with multiple exit routes.
Make sure everyone in the household understands how to use a fire extinguisher, too. There’s a simple mnemonic you can use to teach anyone how to operate it: PASS.
- Pull the pin
- Aim the fire extinguisher at the base of the fire
- Squeeze the handle or level to spray
- Swipe from side to side as you aim and spray
You’ll want to keep up on fire extinguisher maintenance, too. Make sure expired fire extinguishers are replaced and depressurized fire extinguishers are “recharged.”
Mitigate Fire Risks With These Tips
For as many fire risks as there are in your house, there are ways to mitigate them. Be cautious with candles, for instance, and keep your laptops off soft surfaces like blankets, sofas, and pillows.

The Dos and Don’ts of Waterproofing Your Basement
8/15/2022 (Permalink)
Whether your basement is finished or unfinished, living space or storage space, it is an integral piece of your home’s foundation. For that reason, it can be disconcerting when your basement floods.
If you’ve recently found yourself with a flooded basement, you’re probably asking yourself, “How can I make sure this never happens again?”
We’re here to share with you the dos and don’ts of waterproofing your basement. Contact our team at SERVPRO of East York if you have any questions or want to inquire about our water damage restoration services.
DO Regularly Clean Your Gutters
Your gutters aren’t in your basement, but their main purpose is to keep rainwater away from your basement. If they’re clogged up, they’ll overflow, sending water directly down into your basement instead of siphoning water away from your home’s foundation.
Remember, clogged gutters can happen any time of year. Yes, fallen leaves are the main culprit in autumn, but moss and weeds can gum up the works in other seasons as well.
DO Fix Your Downspout
The downspout is the vertical pipe that moves water out of your gutters and away from your home. If your downspouts are broken and leaking—or simply facing the wrong direction—they may be sending water straight into the ground at the foundation of your home.
You want the water to be carried away from your foundation, so be sure the downspouts are working properly.
DO Check for Cracks
Cracks in the foundation of your basement are among the most common sources of water damage. For waterproofing your basement, you’ll want to identify these cracks and have them sealed up as soon as possible. Water can easily enter your home through cracks in the foundation walls.
DO Look for the Source of Leaks
Cracks aren’t the only source for leaks in your basement. If you realize water is indeed getting past your basement’s best defenses, take some time to find the source of the leaks.
If you’re having problems finding the source, an experienced water damage restoration and repair team can lend a hand. They’ll be able to identify the source of leaks and create a plan to seal it up.
DON’T Ignore Damp Spots
Is there an area of your basement that always seems damp? You shouldn’t ignore these waterlogged sections of your basement. They’re often signs of leaks and cracks in your foundation.
Trace any damp spots you find back to their source, so you can fix the leak or crack.
DON’T Neglect Cleaning After a Flood
A flooded basement is likely to be a mess. You may be tempted to ignore it, but don’t. If water is allowed to sit, it can lead to the rapid buildup of mold (which often starts in the first 24 hours).
Aside from the health risks and structural problems mold poses, it will also impede your efforts to waterproof your basement once the floodwaters have subsided. So, be proactive. Have your basement cleaned out by water damage restoration and repair specialists.
Waterproofing Starts With Water Damage Repair
If a flooded basement has alerted you to the importance of waterproofing your basement, know that you’re not alone. Our experts at SERVPRO of East York are here to serve homeowners like you.
Give us a call for fast 24-hour service after a flood. We can help you assess the damage, remove the water, dry and dehumidify the basement, and restore it to a structurally sound condition. If you need help waterproofing your home and basement, give our team a call today!

After a Fire: Dos and Don’ts
After the fire is extinguished, it’s still important to be careful. Some types of fire damage are not always obvious at first. Here are some steps you can take and some things to avoid post-fire:
Do:
- Act quickly. Call a fire damage restoration company right away. The quicker you can get professionals in for repairs, the greater the odds of minimizing long-lasting damage.
- Air out the building. If it is safe to do so, open windows and doors to reduce smoke odors.
- Change your HVAC filter because it may be covered in soot.
- Care for your houseplants. Soot can kill your houseplants, so to keep them healthy, wash both sides of your plants’ leaves.
Don’t:
- Don’t turn on ceiling lights or fans. There may be potentially dangerous damage to the wiring.
- Don’t wash your walls, carpets, or clothes. If not cleaned properly, you may unintentionally lock in any smoke smells.
- Don’t eat food that may have been stored near the fire. Even shelf-stable and canned goods can become unsafe to eat when exposed to fire and smoke damage.
The Fire Restoration Process
We get to work the moment you give us a call. Once our team arrives, we will begin the fire restoration process, which involves the following:
Fire Damage Assessment
Every situation is unique. Our professionals know how to identify the symptoms of fire damage, so they can determine the extent of fire, soot, and smoke damage.
In some situations, a fire can cause water damage, too, whether from overhead sprinklers or broken plumbing. If that is the case, our fire restoration professionals know exactly how to remove water and dry out your property.
Roof and Windows Protection
One of the best ways to expedite fire damage repair is to mitigate further damage. We will immediately board up any damaged windows and secure protective tarps on the roof.
Smoke and Soot Removal
With specialized equipment, we can remove dark soot, smoke, and ash from your home or business. In addition to removing smoke from the ceilings, floors, and walls, we also have specialized tools to remove soot from:
- Sinks
- Electronics
- Paintings and art
- Kitchen items and more
Sanitizing and Deodorizing
After the soot is gone, traces of fire damage remain. At this point in the process, our professionals will deep-clean your belongings and help ensure they are odor-free.
Restoration
The final step involves returning your home or business to as close to a pre-fire condition as possible. This involves everything from minor repairs, like patching drywall and installing new carpet, to major renovations, like reconstructing a room.

When should I get my carpets cleaned?
Deep cleaning your carpets and other upholstery periodically helps them last longer, and it helps rid your home or business of allergens and other pollutants that can affect human health.
For personal residences, most people schedule a carpet and upholstery cleaning about once or twice per year. However, for homes with pets, smokers, and/or small children, more frequent services—about every three to six months—can help keep your home cleaner and healthier.
Carpets in a business also benefit from a deep clean every six months or at least once a year. However, areas with high traffic, like front offices and ground floors should schedule carpet-cleaning services every three to six months.
Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning Methods
At SERVPRO, our professionals use proven, tailored methods to help restore your carpets and upholstery to a like-new condition. Different textiles require specific tools and techniques—here are just a few of the specialized cleaning methods that our teams have mastered:
- Bonnet Cleaning and Hot Water Extraction—These cleaning methods are for low-pile and lightly to moderately soiled surfaces, making them a practical choice for homeowners who need to spring clean or want to deep clean before putting their house up for sale.
- Showcase Premier Cleaning—This is the heaviest-duty clean we offer and is suitable for textiles that need heavy-duty attention, such as soiled carpets in high-traffic areas or upholstery that has fire damage.
- Dry Cleaning—Some carpets and upholstery are sensitive to water or may lose their color if washed. We often perform dry cleaning on wool upholstery and antique rugs.
These are only some of the methods we specialize in. Every person’s situation is unique, so every treatment will be, too.

How to Use a Fire Extinguisher
6/27/2022 (Permalink)
We should all have at least one fire extinguisher somewhere in our home. Every business is required by OSHA to have an approved fire extinguisher as well.
But simply having one on the premises isn’t enough. Your safety, as well as the safety of others, depends on you knowing how to use a fire extinguisher. At SERVPRO of East York, we’re here to cover how to use this fire-fighting device properly and put out a fire when it strikes your home or business.
PASS: How to use a fire extinguisher
There’s an easy mnemonic you can use to remember how to use a fire extinguisher: PASS. In the event of a fire, you should retrieve the extinguisher and stand 6 to 8 feet away from the fire. Then, simply:
- Pull the pin on the fire extinguisher
- Aim the extinguisher nozzle low, at the base of the fire
- Squeeze the handle or lever to release the extinguishing agent
- Sweep the nozzle back and forth, all while keeping it aimed at the base of the fire
With this simple set of applied hand motions, you may be able to extinguish the flames. If you’re unable to put out the fire, you’ll want to get to a safe place—and we’ll show you how to prepare to do just that.
How to get to a safe place
It takes some planning to get to safety–planning before the fire, we mean. Before you even install a fire extinguisher in your home or business, you’ll want to think about where is best to place it.
Make sure you’ll have multiple exit options nearby after you retrieve it. Your fire extinguisher shouldn’t be stored someplace distant from all exit paths.
Of course, you can’t plan for every possible fire scenario. If the fire is in the path of the extinguisher, you’ll need to consider whether it is safer to retrieve it or safer to get yourself out of the building.
Don’t neglect fire extinguisher maintenance
Earlier, we said simply having a fire extinguisher isn’t enough. Well, having one and knowing how to use one isn’t enough either. You need a fire extinguisher that’s in good working order, and that means regular maintenance. But how do you go about maintaining a fire extinguisher?
First, every fire extinguisher comes with an expiration date. After this date, the extinguishing agent will go bad and may not be effective against the flames. If your fire extinguisher is expired, it’s time to have it replaced.
Secondly, keep an eye on the extinguisher’s pressure needle. It should always point to the green zone. If it drops to the red zone, it doesn’t have enough pressure to release the extinguishing agent. You’ll need to add pressure or “recharge” the extinguisher through a certified fire services company.
Be prepared for a fire
The best way to be prepared for a fire is to (1) have an exit plan and (2) have a working fire extinguisher and know how to use it. In the event of a fire, call the fire department as soon as you can safely do so. They have the equipment and manpower to put out the blaze.
After the fire, contact us at SERVPRO of East York for your fire damage restoration and repair needs. We can restore your home or business to its pre-fire condition so life can get back to normal faster.

What Are Signs of Water Damage?
6/27/2022 (Permalink)
Sometimes, it’s immediately obvious when your home or business has water damage. Often, water damage works more stealthily. How will you know you have water damage? The answer: Watch for the warning signs. At SERVPRO of East York, we want to alert you to five common signs of water damage, so you’ll be prepared to act if needed.
1) Dark or Wet Spots
Patches of paint discoloration can appear on your walls or your ceilings. On a white-painted surface, you may see brown-colored spots appear. These dark or wet spots are a clear sign that you have water damage in your home or business.
Don’t try to paint over the spots—that’s an aesthetic fix (and one that won’t last). Instead, immediately call a water damage cleanup specialist who can address the structural problem behind the discoloration. You likely have a hidden plumbing issue that must be fixed.
2) Flaking or Peeling Paint
Stains on the ceilings or walls are one thing—but flaking or peeling paint is another. If you notice this, it’s a major sign that water has been seeping into your drywall, and the problem has been sitting there unaddressed for some time. Water damage in the drywall can spread easily.
3) Soft or Swollen Drywall
If water damage is left to fester for too long, it can cause your ceilings and walls to swell. In some cases, a swollen ceiling could actually begin to sag. If you notice this, it’s time to have the problem addressed, so you don’t risk a ceiling collapse and the hazards that go along with it.
4) A Damp or Musty Smell
Even if you can’t see the signs of water damage, you may be able to smell them. When water is absorbed into wood and drywall and is left to sit there, you’ll quickly notice a musty scent. If you catch a whiff of something damp, try and see if you can identify the source of it. That is likely where your water damage is coming from.

Water Damage and Associated Risks
3/11/2022 (Permalink)
Act quickly when you discover water damage!
Throughout the United States, majority of homes are vulnerable to the possibility of water damage. Water damage can be caused by broken pipes, flooding, roof leaks, etc. Though water damage is common, most homeowners do not realize that just one inch of standing water in a home can cost thousands of dollars. Beyond what homeowners can see, they need to be mindful of additional water/moisture related threats such as mold or even termites! Though not talked about often in water restoration, termites are a problem that most homeowners don’t even consider when discovering a water loss.
ACT QUICKLY!
Because wood is a highly porous material that rapidly absorbs and retains moisture, it is important to act quickly when you discover water damage. If not treated and managed in a timely manner, homeowners may face additional damage in the form of mold, mildew, or wood rot! Not only are these issues unsightly, but mold and mildew can be a safety issue, and cause health effects!
DID YOU SAY TERMITES?
Another issue with water damage is that it can attract termites. Yes, termites! These little pests prefer living in water-damaged wood as they need to be surrounded by moisture. Typically, termites live underground in cool, damp environments. Naturally, water-damaged wood makes a excellent replacement home for these little critters. Termites silently destroy homes, eating away at wooden infrastructure from the inside out. As they are so quiet, most homeowners have no knowledge that termites are present until they have caused tens of thousands of dollars of damage to the house!
Never fear, there are a few ways that you can identify the presence of termites in your home!
- Check the caulking around your shower/bathtub to see if there is any exposed damp wood. If the wood is marked it could mean that you have termites in your home.
- Check any wooden frames around the areas that were affected by water. Again, if there are markings, you may have termites.
- Check any areas that wood was affected by water and look for bite marks (little holes throughout the wood)
- Call a professional exterminator to assess the area.
THE TAKEAWAY
Water damage can cause a lot of problems in the home, even if it is only a small amount of water. For this reason, it is important to make sure that any damp wood in your home is properly dried out if you experience any water loss. This will reduce your likelihood of mold growth and termite infestation. If you have experienced water damage, call SERVPRO of East York at 717-665-1270! We are water restoration professionals that are faster to any size disaster!
Winter Storm Preparedness, Response, and Recovery

Every year, homeowners experience damage from storm-related pipes bursting, roof leaks, ets.. Call SERVPRO of East York; we're here to help!
Two back-to-back winter storms, Uri and Viola, recently wreaked havoc across the Unites States. Southern states that are not accustomed to colder temperatures, snow, or ice were especially impacted by these storms. Uri and Viola have left extensive power outages, vehicular accidents, injuries, and even deaths. With Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, and a large portion of the eastern seaboard being affected, approximately 100 million people have been impacted by these two storms in one way or another.
Though these two storms have caused quite a bit of damage throughout the United States, winter storms are common, especially in eastern states, including our own: Pennsylvania. Each year, hundreds-to-thousands of Americans are injured or killed by exposure to cold temperatures, vehicle accidents on wintry roads, and fires caused by heating sources. SERVPRO of East York wants members of our community to be safe and prepared for winter storms!

Give Winter Fires the Cold Shoulder
2/17/2022 (Permalink)
Call SERVPRO of East York with your fire restoration needs!
Did you know that, statistically, fires occur more often throughout winter than during any other season? Electrical issues, heating sources, carbon monoxide, and portable generators are all contributing factors that lead to an increased risk of a home fire during winter months. Below are some of the leading causes of winter fires. The professionals at SERVPRO of East York hope that you will be able to take the appropriate steps to protect your home and family once you know the risks that you are facing.
ELECTRICAL FIRES
Electrical fires are one of the leading causes of home fires throughout the United States. Approximately half of all residential electrical fires involve inadequate electrical distribution, or the use of lighting equipment. Other electrical fires occur from things like overloaded circuits, dryer fans, and portable space heaters.
Electrical Safety Tips:
- Check electrical cords often. Replace cracked, damaged, and loose electrical or extension cords. Do NOT try to repair them.
- Home appliances should be plugged directly into a wall outlet. To reduce your risk of fire, unplug small appliances when they are not in use.
- Be aware that extension cords are for temporary use only. Have a licensed electrician determine if additional circuits or wall outlets are needed in your home.
- Only use surge protectors / power strips that have internal overload protection.
- Avoid putting cords under rugs / carpets, across doorways, or where they can be damaged or pinched by furniture,
Call a licensed electrician if any of the following apply:
- You see sparks from a wall outlet
- You experience flickering lights outside of a storm event.
- You have reoccurring issues with blown fuses or tripping circuit breakers.
- You experience a tingling feeling when you touch an electrical appliance.
- There is a burning odor coming from an appliance.
- You notice discolored wall outlets and/or switches.
- You have cracked or broken wall outlets
HEATING SOURCES
Heating sources are the second leading cause of residential fires in the United States. December, January, and February are the peak months for heating fires to occur, and space heaters are the most common heating source involved in heating-related fires. Space heaters account for approximately 44% (more than two out of every five) heating-related fired, and also account for the vast majority of deaths and injuries in home fires caused by heating equipment.
Space Heater Safety Tips:
- Before using any space heater, read the manufacturer’s instructions and warning labels.
- Inspect heaters for cracked or broken plugs and any loose connections before each use.
- Never leave a space heater unattended. Turn it off when you're leaving a room or going to sleep.
- Proper placement of space heaters is critical. Heaters must be kept at least three feet away from anything that can burn, including papers, clothing, and rugs.
- Plug space heaters directly into a wall outlet. Do not use an extension cord or power strip.
- Place space heaters on level, flat surfaces.
- Always unplug and safely store the heater when it is not in use.

https://www.SERVPROeastyork.com/blog
CARBON MONOXIDE
Carbon monoxide is often referred to as the invisible killer. Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless gas created when fuels like gasoline, wood, coal, propane, etc… do not burn completely. In the home, heating and cooking equipment that burn fuel are potential sources of Carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide incidents are more common during the winter months in residential properties.
Carbon Monoxide Safety Tips:
- Install carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your home, especially near sleeping areas.
- If you need to warm a vehicle prior to driving, remove it from the garage immediately after starting it. Do not leave the engine running if the garage door is open.
- Ensure that vents are properly cleaned and free of debris.
PORTABLE GENERATORS
Portable generators are often used during power outages. Though handy, most homeowners are unaware that improper use of a portable generator can be risky. The most common dangers associated with portable generators are carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, electrical shock, and fire hazards
Portable Generator Safety Tips:
- Portable generators should be used outside the home, away from windows and doors.
- Portable generators should be kept away from open flames or fuel burning appliances
- Do not overload cords; check for the generators maximum wattage listed on label.
- Do not refuel the generator while it's running or when hot; turn the generator off, let it cool before refueling.

Repairing Water-Damaged Drywall
2/16/2022 (Permalink)
Handling water damage drywall can be exhausting. Call SERVPRO of East York for your water damage restoration needs.
Whether it's from leaky plumbing, a storm event, or a window being left open, there is always a chance that your walls could be subject to water damage. While large scale water damage should be left to a professional for restoration, you may choose to tackle small sections of damaged drywall on your own. The SERVPRO of East York County team of professionals utilize a 4-Step Method for repairing water damaged drywall. Below, we highlight each step of the four-step method we use so you can easily repair or replace water damaged drywall. If you're even unsure of how to proceed, SERVPRO of East York County is Here to Help!
STEP 1: Find and Repair the Leak
There’s no point in repairing a water damaged wall if you haven't removed the source of the damage first. Finding the leak that caused damage can sometimes be difficult, but you can use clues from the damage to get a better idea as to where the water is coming from:
- If the damage appears to run downward from the top of the wall, and also affects the ceiling, a roof leak is likely a good contender for being the cause of loss. PRO TIP: You can spray your roof with a garden hose and watch for dripping in your attic to detect roof leaks.
- Water damage that is directly in the center of the wall is often an indicator that a broken pipe behind the wall is your cause of loss. PRO TIP: High-pressure leaks in pipes behind walls may make an audible hiss if you hold your ear to the wall.
With some investigating and basic plumbing knowledge, you may be able to find and repair and leak on your own. If you doubt your abilities in the slightest, contact a professional for guidance.
STEP 2: Replace Saturated Drywall
Drywall is a highly porous material, therefore the longer it is exposed to water, the more water it will absorb. This water absorption will eventually cause your drywall to become soft and spongy. After a certain point, your drywall may eventually start to sag inward. Unfortunately, drywall that has been saturated to this extent cannot be salvaged, and you will need to remove and replace the damaged section of wall or ceiling.
- Use a stud finder to locate the studs behind the damaged section of drywall.
- Once you have located the stud, cut straight lines around the damage using a level and a drywall knife.
- When you remove the damaged drywall, check the insulation behind it. If the insulation is saturated, you will likely need to remove and replace the insulation before putting in new drywall.
- Cut a new piece of drywall to the same size of the hole. Line up your new piece of drywall and screw it into the studs.
- Cover the seams with joint compound and tape, and then sand and paint the drywall.
STEP 3: Scrub Away Mold
In addition to soaking up moisture, the pores in drywall can make excellent places for mold spores to hide and develop. If parts of your drywall are still structurally sound but are beginning to foster mold, you can kill the mold by scrubbing the walls with detergent, diluted bleach, or a commercial mold remover. PRO-TIP: Do NOT mix chemical products together. Always read the labels and use as directed!
- Always wear gloves and a dust mask when handling mold.
- Ensure that there is proper ventilation in the room you are working in. Ventilation and the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will help protect you from spores that may be released while scrubbing.
- Spray the affected area of the wall with the solution you are using to clean.
- Scrub the wall with a soft bristle cleaning brush or abrasive sponge. PRO TIP: Scrubbing can still be effective if the wall is unpainted, but in severe cases you may need to replace the mold-covered section.
STEP 4: Cover Water Stains
Next, you will want to cover any light water stains on the remaining sections of drywall, that weren't significantly damaged.
- First, you will want to scrub the affected area with a damp cloth, or sand it to remove paint, dirt, and debris.
- Then, spray the area with a shellac or oil-based primer, that is formulated for blocking stains.
- After the primer has dried, you can simply paint over the area with interior paint.
When in doubt, leave it to the pros!
Repairing mild to moderate water damage on drywall is not too difficult if you know the process. If you are faced with severe water damage, or are unable to locate the source of the leak, contact SERVPRO of East York County at 717-665-1270! Calling SERVPRO of East York County gives you the opportunity to work with an experienced water damage restoration professional who can restore your walls to like-new condition.
Winter Water Damage Prevention
2/9/2022 (Permalink)
Know who to call if you experience winter water damage.
Though winter months bring cooler temperatures, hot cocoa, and scenic snow landscapes, winter weather also brings increased risk of water damage to your home. Winter is notorious for being cold and wet. Many people don’t realize that larger amounts of snow and ice can have severe consequences. Below are three of the top causes of winter water damage and how to reduce your risk.
OUTDOOR WATER SOURCES
When the temperatures drop, it is important to pay attention to your outdoor water sources. Neglecting your outdoor water sources could cause problems when spring comes around.
- Shut off the water to your outdoor hoses and spigots.
- Drain any water from your hoses and store them in a climate-controlled area to prevent them from freezing, cracking, or breaking in the cold.
BURST OR FROZEN PIPES
Frozen pipes build up significant pressure which can lead to pipes cracking or bursting in winter months. If a cracked or broken pipe goes undetected, they can lead to flooding once the ice melts.
- Make sure your outer walls and any exposed pipes are properly insulated.
- Be sure to caulk cracks and holes you see in your exterior walls; this can help to prevent cold air from reaching the pipes.
- Protect exposed pipes from freezing temperatures by wrapping them with the insulating tape or old towels.
- When temperatures are extremely low, or you plan to be away from home for several days, leave the faucets lightly dripping and keep the cabinets under your sink open to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes. Doing so will keep water flowing and can help prevent your pipes from freezing.
- For maximum protection against hidden or sudden leaks, install a detection system that can monitor water pressure and automatically signal a water shut-off in the event of a leak or blocked pipe.
ICE DAMS AND ROOF LEAKS
Icicles may be a staple of winter, but they can be a sign that your home is in a vulnerable state. If your gutters are clogged, the snow that melts off your roof won't be able to pass through the drainage system properly. As the water trapped in your gutters refreezes, a wall of icicles will build up, eventually causing ice dams. The melt from these ice dams can damage your roof and seep into your attic, causing structural damage or mold. Any ice melt that drips over the sides of your gutters has the potential to pool next to your home's foundation and cause additional water damage. Finally, sharp icicles may break off as they melt, posing a serious safety hazard.
- Clean your gutters before cold weather comes around to keep the dangers of ice dams and roof leaks at a minimum.

Heating Safety Tips
2/4/2022 (Permalink)
Know the risks associated with heating your home this winter.
It’s no secret that we need heat to keep us warm throughout the winter months. Though heat is necessary, many do not consider that heating their home can come with risk. Many studies show that fires occur more often in winter than in any other season. That said, SERVPRO of East York has come up with safety tips to help keep you and your family safe when it’s time to turn the heat on.
Safety Tips for Fire Prevention This Winter
There are a few different ways to heat your home in the winter. Some homes use wood-burning appliances, while others rely on gas furnaces. You may even find yourself using an electric heater to warm up certain rooms in your home. There are fire prevention tips below for all three of these heating options.
Wood-Burning Appliances
Wood-burning appliances can include fireplaces and wood stoves. If you have either, ensure that your chimney or wood stove is professionally inspected and cleaned each year.
You should also not leave your fireplace unattended. Place a screen in front of it to keep embers from flying into your home while your fireplace is in use. Put the fire out when you’re finished with the fire for the night. Do not close the fireplace dampener until the ashes are cool to the touch. Waiting to close the damper prevents the fire from heating up again or forcing carbon monoxide into your home.
Some tips for both wood-burning appliances include:
- Keep flammable objects at least three feet from your wood stove or fireplace.
- Never use flammable liquids to start or accelerate a fire in your home.
- Discard cooled ashes in a covered metal container. Store the container outside and away from the house.
If the unexpected happens, your local SERVPRO team is here to help.
Gas Furnaces
Check out our fire prevention tips below if you have a gas furnace.
- Have your furnace inspected annually to ensure that it is safe to operate.
- Inspect the walls and ceiling near the furnace and along the chimney line. If the wall is hot or discolored, install additional pipe insulation.
- Check that the flue pipe and pipe seams are well-supported and without holes or cracks. Soot along or around seams may signal a leak.
- Keep combustible items away from the heating system.
Contact a professional if you have questions about keeping your home safe when using a gas furnace.
Other Fire Safety Tips
Fire damage is not the only concern when heating your home. Smoke and carbon monoxide can make it difficult to breathe properly. To detect these buildups early, ensure adequate smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are in your home.
Do you use portable generators? Keep them outside and away from doors and windows to prevent carbon monoxide build-up.
A stove can be another source of carbon monoxide. To prevent a build-up from your oven or stove, don’t use it as a heat source for your home.
Electric heaters can be an excellent source of heat. If you use electric heaters, plug only one heater into a wall outlet at a time to avoid overloading the circuit. You’ll also want to avoid using electric heaters in bathrooms or other areas where water is used.
Sometimes during the winter, pipes freeze. Never try to thaw frozen water pipes with a blow torch or other open flame.

Emergency FIRE Response Plans for Businesses
1/12/2022 (Permalink)
P.A.S.S.- Pull. Aim. Squeeze. Sweep.
Your business may already have an Emergency Response Plan (ERP) in place, but are you certain that it covers everything you and your staff need to know? Formulating a complete and thorough evacuation plan may not be easy, but doing so can help protect you and your employees. At SERVPRO of East York County, we offer ERP consultations to ensure that your business is ready; each Emergency Response Plan is unique as it is customized to your business's specific needs. In the meantime, here are some things you may want to make sure are included in your plan:
1. Fire Extinguisher Locations
It is important to ensure that every employee knows exactly where each fire extinguisher is located. This important step can save precious time during a fire, and has the potential to mitigate the situation before it causes further damage. Fire extinguishers should be easy to locate and easily accessible during an emergency. Additionally, employees should be trained on fire extinguisher use, using the P.A.S.S. technique. Fire extinguishers should be assessed annually by a trained professional to ensure that it is properly charged and ready to use. NOTE: Fire extinguishers should only be used if you see the fire start. If you are unsure in your ability to stop the spread of a fire, evacuate immediately and call 911.
2. Exit Locations
Another important part of an Emergency Response Plan is knowing where the nearest exits are from any point in the building. Knowing these locations will allow you and your staff to safely exit the building in a timely manner if a fire occurs. NOTE: There should be at least two exit points from every workspace, in the event that one path is blocked.
3. Designated Meeting Place
Another important step in creating your Emergency Response Plan is setting and communicating a "Designated Meeting Place". The Designated Meeting Place should be outside and a safe distance from the building. All employees should be trained on the location of the Designated Meeting Place, and should gather at that location so they can be quickly accounted for. NOTE: It is recommended that businesses conduct both routine and random fire drills to prepare staff for an actual fire. These drills can be used as training opportunities.
4. Emergency Contacts
In the event of a fire, call 911! Though 911 is the first number to remember, it is important to have employee Emergency Contact Information saved and accessible. You may want to include a note in your plan about where this information is stored to ensure it’s accessible when needed.
5. Post-Fire Information
In addition to Emergency Contact Information for employees, you may also want to include the location of insurance and mitigation and restoration professionals phone numbers in your plan. Doing this will ensure that you have the necessary resources available after a fire occurs. NOTE: Having the number of a trusted fire restoration service like SERVPRO of East York may make fire cleanup easier and less stressful.

A clean office means fewer pests
12/10/2021 (Permalink)
A clean office and a Merry Christmas!
Office pests can include insects and small mammals, like mice. These pests are often attracted to an office for a few key resources — food, water, and shelter. Offices are sometimes more prone to pests simply because cleaning may not be a top priority for your staff. Learn how you can boost the cleanliness of your office and help prevent pests.
Break Rooms
Break rooms tend to be ground zero for pest infestations, as this is where the bulk of food storage, preparation, and consumption occurs.
Garbage Cans
You will want to advise your employees to line garbage cans with plastic bags. Doing so will help contain odors. For optimal scent consolidation, opt for lidded receptacles in the break room and common areas where food may be disposed of.
If you utilize a daily cleaning service, it is best practice to empty each waste bin every evening, regardless of whether or not food and candy wrappers are present. Full service cleaning companies will empty individual garbage cans if the offices are left open or if keys are provided. For offices with only weekly cleaning services, or that have locked offices, a staff member should empty garbage cans every night.
Pantries
The state of an office pantry can leave a lot to be desired, and this isn't typically an area serviced by your cleaning crew. Instruct employees keep all food items in sealed plastic bags or storage containers. All storage containers should have a sealed, tight fitting lid. Additionally, make sure spills in the pantry areas are cleaned up promptly; the longer food sits, the more likely that pests will find their food source.
Hard Surfaces
During short breaks, employees don't always have the time to thoroughly clean up after themselves. Spills on counter tops, food left in the sink, and crumbs on tables or floors can all lead to a pest infestation. Fortunately, an office cleaning crew can save your break room. The crew will wipe down and disinfect all surfaces. A cleaning service can also wash dishes, clean out the sinks, and mop at the end of every workday.
Offices and Cubicles
There are many office-specific practices that can be attractive to pests, such as storing food in desks, or keeping stacks of paper on the floor.
Snacks
No one wants to limit snacking in the office, but setting a few ground rules is a must! Any food kept in cubicles, desks, etc... should be stored in pest-proof containers, such as jars or lidded food storage containers. Candy jars and similar items should also have lids on them. There should never be half-empty soda cans, water cups, or coffee mugs left on desks overnight.
Cleaning services don't typically remove items from desktops, so it is up to your staff to stay on top of these issues.
Dust and Debris
Dust, stacks of papers, and general untidiness can also invite pests into a space, plus a mess makes it harder for your cleaning service to do a thorough job. Only 29 percent of office workers feel that their office is cleaned adequately, but part of the problem could be the state of the office before the cleaning staff arrives.
Instruct all employees to file papers away each day. And don’t allow items stacked on the floor. This will allow your cleaning service to do a thorough job.
Carpet Spills
Regular carpet cleaning is a must in any office! Crumbs and spilled liquids leave behind tempting morsels for pests. Most office cleaning services also provide office carpet shampoo services. Set up a monthly schedule for a deep clean and you won't have to worry about pests. As a bonus, your office will look and feel much cleaner.

Preventing and Responding to Frozen Pipes
12/9/2021 (Permalink)
Brrrrrr.... It's that time of the year again!
With snow starting to fall in East York and surrounding counties, it is safe to say that the Holiday season is amongst us! Though snow can be beautiful to look at, lower temperatures bring threats beyond frostbite: FROZEN PIPES. Now is the time to learn more about how you can avoid frozen pipes and the associated water damage that can occur if your home’s pipes expand and burst. While a common occurrence, frozen pipes are highly preventable, and acting now can help you and your family in the long run!
EXPERT TIPS FOR PREVENTING FROZEN PIPES
As members of our community, SERVPRO of East York County would like to extend some knowledge to our friends and neighbors! The following tips will help you and your family in preventing your pipes from freezing:
- Maintain a consistent temperature throughout your home. If you will be leaving your home unoccupied over winter months, leave the heat on and set your thermostat no lower than 55° F.
- Ensure that all exposed pipes are properly insulated. Pay special attention to where pipes may be unheated; unheated areas may include areas such as basements, attics, garages, crawl spaces, and under the cabinets in your kitchen and bathroom(s).
- Remove and drain any hoses that are outside of your home.
- Close any inside valves that supply water outdoors, Open outside valves to properly drain any excess water remaining in the pipes.
- In especially freezing temperatures, let your faucet trickle. Running water is far less likely to freeze than resting water.
EXPERT TIPS FOR THAWING FROZEN PIPES
If you turn on your faucet and only a few drops come out, you may already have a frozen pipe. Typically, frozen pipes are those that run along exterior walls, or where your water service enters your home through the foundation. If you are reading this blog because your pipes have already frozen, SERVPRO of East York County is Here to Help! Our Team has come up with the following tips to help you thaw out your frozen pipes before they expand and burst:
- Leave the faucet on while treating frozen pipes. Flowing water will help melt the ice as you go!
- Apply heat to the frozen section of the pipe by using an electric heating pad, a hair dryer, or by wrapping pipes with towels that have been soaked in hot water.
- NEVER use a blowtorch, kerosene heater, propane heater, or other open flame device.
- Check all faucets in your home to see if you have any additional frozen pipes; if one pipe freezes, others may have frozen as well.
WE’RE HERE TO HELP
If you were not able to prevent or thaw frozen pipes, contact our team of trained professionals at SERVPRO of East York County! In the unfortunate event you experience water damage caused by frozen pipes or otherwise, call us at 717-665-1270; SERVPRO of East York County is a 24/7 emergency service provider!
Heating Safety Tips
10/12/2021 (Permalink)
Know the risks involved with heating your home, so you can avoid them.
It’s no secret that we need heat to keep us warm throughout the winter months. Though heat is a necessity, many do not consider that heating their home doesn’t come without risk. Many studies show that fires occur more often in winter than in any other season. With that being said, SERVPRO of East York would like you and your family to keep the following tips in mind:
Safety Tips for Fire Prevention This Winter:
Wood-Burning Appliances
- Have your chimney professionally inspected and cleaned before lighting your wood stove or fireplace each year.
- Keep flammable objects at least three feet from your wood stove or fireplace.
- Never use flammable liquids to start or accelerate a fire in your home.
- Keep a screen in front of fireplaces to prevent embers from flying out.
- Do not leave your fireplace unattended; It is best practice to ensure your fire is out before going to sleep each night.
- Before closing your fireplace damper, ensure the ashes are cool to the touch. Closing the damper could help the fire to heat up again and will could force carbon monoxide into your home.
- Discard cooled ashes in a covered metal container. Store the container outside and away from the house.
Gas Furnaces
- Have your furnace inspected annually to ensure that it is safe to operate.
- Inspect the walls and ceiling near the furnace and along the chimney line. If the wall is hot or discolored, install additional pipe insulation.
- Check that the flue pipe and pipe seams are well supported and without holes or cracks. Soot along or around seams may signal a leak.
- Keep combustible items away from the heating system.
Other Fire Safety Tips
- Ensure that there is adequate smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home.
- To prevent carbon monoxide build-up, keep portable generators outside and away from doors and windows.
- Never use a stove or oven for heating. Not only is doing so a safety hazard, but it can also be a source of carbon monoxide.
- If you use electric heaters, plug only one heater into a wall outlet at a time to avoid overloading the circuit.
- Avoid using electric heaters in bathrooms or other areas where water is used.
- Never try to thaw frozen water pipes with a blow torch or other open flame.

Smoke and soot are invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allow us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.
Smoke and soot facts:
- Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
- Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
- The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.
We are proud to have 24-hour emergency services, so we can be there when you need us. We’re part of your community and want to see our community members get back on their feet after a fire.
Different Types of Smoke
There are two different types of smoke—wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Below, we’ve covered some common types of smoke and fire residue:
Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber
- Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood
- Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises, therefore smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
- Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of East York will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting.

A flood pump helps you pump out flood water or excess ground water quickly. They will also need to fix frozen pipes that prevents water from flowing out and ice dams that may lead to roof leaks.
Below are the various steps that are involved during professional storm remediation.
1) Make an emergency contact with your service provider

Storms comes with various risks that can threaten your safety and you need to take preventive and precautionary measures. The first source of risks in case of a flooding is the power sources in our home or business and you need to ensure that all power sources are switched off immediately. The home restoration company should determine the river flooding levels, amount of flood water, wind damages, ice damage, hail damage, and river flooding levels at the beginning of the storm remediation. A flood pump can be helpful in getting rid of flood water or excess ground water and eliminating the risk of water damage for your households. In case there are broken pipes or frozen pipes, they will need repairing in addition to fixing any roof leaks.
3) You should document evidence of storm damage.
You must document evidence of water damage, ice damage, hail damage, wind damage, and roof damage. Documentation of evidence is important, as it is important for insurance claim forms filling. In case you used a flood pump to get rid of water, you can take photographs, record videos, and record any relevant audios. Ice dams can lead to ice damming and this can lead to frozen pipes that are beneficial as they can cut water supply.
4) Notify your insurance agent of the storm damages.
After you have done documentation of storm damages, you should notify your insurance agent so that they can initiate the process of compensation. In case the insurance company needs to carry out an inspection, they can do it as soon as possible when the state of your damaged property is still intact.
5) You can seek Federal Disaster Assistance when in need of extensive storm remediation.
The federal governments has an elaborate program to help those affected by river flooding, wind damage and other forms of natural disasters. The federal government provides subsidized loans to allow victims restore their homes by paying for minor services for roof repairs and water restoration. This makes it easy for you to cope with ice damming, flooding, hurricane damage, and hail damage.
6) Management of ice dams, wind damage, hurricane damage, hail damage, and roof damage
Home restoration after a flood will involve minor ad major repairs such as window and door repairs, household replacement, restoration of water and electric supply, and checking for ice dams. A home restoration process should begin as soon as possible to minimize damages from hail damage and potential roof repairs. You should ensure that frozen pipes due to ice damming and frozen dams are heated up to restore water supply. In storm restoration, dehumidifiers are used to absorb water moisture and water suckers to allow the restoration personnel to pump water out using flood pumps. A roof repair is also important in fixing minor roof leaks.

SERVPRO technician completing water restoration caused by storm damage.
Even the best building designs are put to the test by mother nature. This time in the form of hail.
The internal gutter system of a technologies facility in the Mount Joy area became clogged when quarter sized hail rained down as violent thunderstorms devastated the area overnight. Storms so severe it appeared that a tornado had touch down in the Susquehanna Valley.
With a mixture of ingenuity, and professional know how; our technicians assessed the damage that resulted from the overflow of rain water throughout the facility, and quickly took action.
With minor disturbance on the office staff, and shop employees, the Mount Joy based technologies company was able to remain open, and in full swing of operations. A valuable asset to any company is knowing that though the situation seems bleak, it's no match for the professional training SERVPRO technicians have.
Till next time Mother Nature, as SERVPRO East York stands strong for the community.

If you don't know which SERVPRO is closest, contact SERVPRO's corporate hotline; they connect you to a local franchise that can assist you in a timely manner. During the initial contact, our team gathers information about the type and extent of the damage that has occurred.
Step 2 - Assessment:
The SERVPRO of East York team arrives within four hours of the initial call. Once there, they assess the damage to the property. Water restoration specialists survey the building to determine what repairs need to be made.
Step 3 - Extraction:
Before any repairs can begin, all standing water and non-restorable materials must be removed. Our highly trained technicians use industrial pumps to extract water quickly. Then they remove drenched drywall, insulation, carpet, carpet padding, tiles, and other materials that cannot be salvaged.
Step 4 - Drying:
If the source of the water damage has been a problem for an extended period of time, it has probably made the affected area very moist or wet. Not only does every surface that remains have to be dried thoroughly, but the humidity levels in the air itself need to be returned to an acceptable level. We place commercial-grade dehumidifiers, air movers, and other drying equipment to dry the area. It is important that commercial-grade equipment be used because standard dehumidifiers and fans will likely not have the capacity to remove the correct amount of moisture.
Step 5 - Sanitizing:
Often, a leaking water sources does more than just cause water damage. The water it expels may become a breeding ground for bacteria and other microbes. Therefore, every inch of the affected area must be sanitized before rebuilding can begin. We use a safe anti-microbial spray to sanitize the area!
Step 6 - Restoration:
After everything is clean and dry, the mitigation and remediation side of the job is done! SERVPRO of Western Lancaster has an in-house Rebuild Team! Our Rebuild Technicians restore your property "Like it never even happened.”

Responding to Water Damage
8/6/2021 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of East York is prepared for any water loss no matter the size!
WATER DAMAGE:
Water damage can happen anywhere, but some areas and types of damage occur far more often than others. When problems go beyond simple cleanup and sanitation, your cleaning personnel or company may be ill-equipped to handle the consequences of significant water damage. SERVPRO of East York specializes in providing fast and efficient services, ensuring all affected areas are clean, undamaged, and pleasant-smelling after a water loss.
COMMON WATER LOSS CAUSES:
Plumbing Overflow -
A common reason for us to be called to a site for water damage is when a sink, toilet, or bathtub overflows. In commercial settings, like hotels, determining when, where, and why water damage has occurred can sometimes be difficult. At times, it may be days or more before you discover a water loss, and water can begin to leak elsewhere, causing further damages. Our team of professionals will draft a detailed assessment of the situation, and can provide an estimate of our projected work times and costs.
Water Line Leaks and Breaks -
With water lines running throughout the building, it may not be uncommon for them to leak or burst, especially if they are older. Be sure to call SERVPRO of East York as soon as you suspect that a water line may have been ruptured. The speed of our response may be critical in preventing further damages. To avoid most water line problems in your home or business, make sure that pipes receive semi-regular maintenance and checkups.
Open Windows -
Sometimes we want a bit of fresh air, so we open a window. If you forget to close the window before a storm rolls through your area, water damage can occur quickly. Rain pouring into your structure through an open window can cause significant damage to furniture, walls, and flooring, but most of the worst effects can be prevented through a quick call to SERVPRO.
WHAT OUR TECHNICIANS WILL DO:
- Assess damages and determine if site is safe
- Determine the extent of the moisture content in affected areas
- Move furniture that may hinder drying results
- Extract water
- Remove drywall and flooring (if necessary)
- Start the drying process with air movers and dehumidifiers
- Ensure rooms are completely dry and conduct a walk through with home/business owners, to guarantee customer satisfaction
WHO TO CALL:
At SERVPRO of East York, no job is too big or too small for our Team of certified and highly trained experts. If water damage occurs in your residential home or commercial property, call the professionals at SERVPRO of East York at 717-665-1270. It is important to call as soon as possible because water damage that has not been mitigated by professionals, can quickly become a breeding ground for mold or further damages.
Fire Tips and Safety
8/5/2021 (Permalink)
This is some of the customers contents after SERVPRO of East York was called on to mitigate and restore a shed after a fire.
Understand Fears
Fires are scary for anyone, especially a young child. It's completely normal for a child to worry that the fire will return, that their home won't go back to its normal (pre-fire) state or that another similar disaster will happen.
While it's tempting to shut down your child's fears with simple statements, you need to listen before speaking. Ask your child what they're afraid of and why they're scared. Help them to dig deep, and ask open-ended questions about why they think fires start and what they can do to prevent one.
Younger children won't always have the language skills to completely express what they're feeling inside. This can lead to tantrums or out-of-character behaviors. You can help your child to express their feelings (and help yourself to understand their feelings) in a nonverbal way, such as painting or drawing.
Provide the Facts
Along with the emotional or psychological trauma the fire itself causes comes fear of the unknown. Your child may wonder what will happen now. If your house sustained serious damage, your child’s questions may include wondering whether your family can move back in, whether your child's room will return to normal, or whether they'll have their favorite toys to play with.
As you create a recovery and restoration plan, fill your child in on the facts. Provide them with the steps you're taking to salvage the house and any belongings. It's likely that you'll already have a restoration timeline in place prior to talking to your child. Draw out the timeline for them and give them a concrete look at when they can expect to return home.
Find Temporary Housing
Depending on the extent of the damage, your child may clearly see that they can’t return home immediately. Stop fears before they start by reassuring your child the family has a safe place to stay. Book a hotel room, ask family if you can stay with them, or find a friend's house to live in temporarily.

What do you need to create a restoration or recovery timeline? You need a professional contractor who can get the job done efficiently and effectively. Cleaning smoke and fire damage isn't a job for a novice. Not only does your home need to look like it did before the fire, but you also need to make sure that it's structurally and physically safe.
A restoration contractor can remove odors, stains, and other evidence of the fire. Eliminating these clear reminders of the disaster can reduce the lingering impact that memories of the fire may have on your child. Beyond that, it can help them get back to their life in an environment that looks almost like it did before.
Remediate Mold
The fire isn't the only potential cause of home damage. Extinguishing the flames may have left your home a charred, damp mess. If you have wet furniture, carpeting, or other home items, the restoration professional can also check for mold growth.
Locating and remediating the mold is a job for a professional restoration contractor. The expert can remove any growth, take steps to prevent future growth, and leave your home a cleaner place.

Water damage in your commercial building can have many negative consequences to your business. Depending on the severity, water damage can reduce your everyday workflow and productivity. It is important that you first identify the cause of the water damage to stop it at the source, then you must dry out the area in order to be able to begin the restoration process. This water damage could lead to the growth of mold, which can then affect residents, customers, and employees quality of life. SERVPRO of East York was called on to restore a commercial property and mitigate mold.
First impressions can be a make or break for a business, which makes a well maintained building very important. Visitors will first notice the exterior of the business, but the interior is equally as important to keep up on. A clean, well put together establishment can form a sense of comfortability in your employees, residents, or potential customers. A clean environment can make your potential customers and residents feel more welcomed, and if they feel welcomed you are more than likely to gain their business. SERVPRO of East York is here to give you the information or assistance you may need!
Commercial Cleaning Tips
1) Change air ducts and filters
- Dirty air ducts and filters can have unhealthy consequences for residents or customers due to dirt, dust, pollen, and mildew buildup. This can also be more expensive because a dirty air filter will need to work harder in order to keep up, which means it will need to use more power.
2) Cleaning floors/carpets on a schedule
- Carpets can act as filters and can attract allergens, dust, and dirt.
- Carpets/floors should be cleaned on a schedule depending on how much foot traffic they have through out that time period.
3) Keep the exterior of the building tidy
- Sweeping walkways of any debris can decrease the amount of dust, dirt, and/or allergens from being tracked inside.
- A periodic pressure washing of the building can remove any dirt or mildew that has been collected on the surface.
4) Disinfect areas frequently
- Disinfecting your business is an important aspect due to the increase in concerns for COVID-19. To keep employees, residents and customers feeling safe and comfortable, disinfecting is crucial.
5) Keep up on the structure of your business
- Storms, pests and evn everyday activities can cause wear and tear on the structure of a building, whether it be from water damage, wind damage, or even termites.
- Wear and tear on the structure can have many negative effects such as mold growth.
Our professionals at SERVPRO of East York are highly trained and experiences in all of these areas. We can guide you through any situation or we can simply do it for you. Our priority is to make customers feel comfortable and reassure you that we will meet any of your business' needs.

Remediation and Restoration

An example of a water damaged bathroom that lead to the growth of mold. SERVPRO professionals was called on to complete the restoration process.
WATER DAMAGE:
Water damage can happen anywhere, but some areas and types of damage occur far more often than others. When problems go beyond simple cleanup and sanitation, your cleaning personnel or company may be ill-equipped to handle the consequences of significant water damage. SERVPRO of East Lancaster specializes in providing fast and efficient services, ensuring all affected areas are clean, undamaged, and pleasant-smelling after a water loss.
If water damage occurs in your residential home or commercial property, call the professionals at SERVPRO of East York at (717)-665-1270. It is important to call as soon as possible because water damage that has not been mitigated by professionals, can quickly become a breeding ground for mold or further damages.

Shedding Light On Fire Damage
5/14/2020 (Permalink)
Have questions about fire, smoke, or soot damage? Call SERVPRO of East York!
DAMAGE BEYOND THE FLAMES:
Fire damages go beyond the fire itself! Smoke and soot damage are common, and are very invasive. Smoke and soot can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. SERVPRO of East York's smoke damage expertise allows us to accurately assess the extent of the damages to develop a comprehensive plan of action.
- Smoke and soot can continue to cause damage and corrosion after a fire is out.
- Odors from smoke will stay in a room or a home long after the fire, and continue to cause problems if they are not removed.
- In just a few minutes, walls and other surfaces can become discolored.
- Smoke causes etching in glass after just a short time, and smoke will tarnish metal quickly.
NOT ALL FIRE DAMAGE IS THE SAME:
There are two different types of smoke – wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of East York will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:
Wet Smoke: Plastic and Rubber
- Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke: Paper and Wood
- Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises more quickly.
Protein Fire Residue: Produced by evaporation of material
- Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
DON'T DO IT ALONE: WE'RE HERE TO HELP!
Residue left behind from a fire is bio-hazardous and can cause health complications if not taken care of correctly. Attempting to clean fire damage on your own may cause additional damage, and can be quite costly. Only trained professionals, with the right training and equipment, can ensure that the job is done properly.
What NOT to do:
- Do not use electrical appliances until they have been checked
- Do not touch anything with your bare hands. Oil from your hands can cause additional damage
- Do not wash walls or attempt to clean carpets and upholstered furniture
OUR FIRE DAMAGE EXPERTISE:
Because each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution, tailored for the specific conditions. We have the equipment and experience to restore your home or business after fire and smoke damage.
Have questions about fire, smoke, or soot damage? Call SERVPRO of East York today at 717-665-1270!
Helpful Hand Washing Tips & Reminders
5/12/2020 (Permalink)
If your hands are visibly dirty, please use soap and water to cleanse.
With the COVID-19 pandemic being at the front of most of our minds, SERVPRO of East York thought this would be a good time for hand washing tips and reminders! The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends a 5-step hand washing protocol:
1. Wet
Turn on the tap and wet your hands with warm or cold water.
2. Lather
With the tap running, apply soap and lather by rubbing your hands together. Be sure to lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your fingernails.
3. Scrub
Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. An easy way to time this is by singing “Happy Birthday” twice.
4. Rinse
Rinse your hands under clean, running water. We recommend facing your fingers toward the bottom of the sink. Leave water running.
5. Dry
Dry your hands by using a clean towel. Use the towel to turn the tap off when done.
When to Wash Your Hands:
- Before, during, and after preparing food
- Before and after eating food
- Before and after caring for someone who is sick
- Before and after treating a cut or wound
- After going to the grocery store
- After using the bathroom
- After pumping gas
- After sneezing, coughing, or blowing your nose
- After touching an animal, animal feed, or animal waste
- After touching garbage
- When your hands are visibly dirty
Helpful Tip: In most cases, if soap and water are not available, you can use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. If your hands are visibly dirty please use soap and water.

Helpful Cleaning Tips
5/7/2020 (Permalink)
SERVPRO: We're Here to Help!
Now more than ever, we remind our community that cleaning your home and office clean is a top priority. At SERVPRO of East York, we have a team of specialists that are experts in cleaning and disinfecting services.
We understand that not everyone is seeking professional cleaning at this time, therefore thought some helpful cleaning tips would help members of our community stay safe. Proper cleaning will prevent the spread of pathogens, and helps keep people healthier year-round.
Here are four tips we think could help:
1.) Wipe in One Direction:
It is important to always wipe in one direction. When you wipe a surface in one direction and then go back in the opposite direction, you are spreading the germs back onto the surface. A swift wipe in one direction will be most effective in removing germs from surfaces.
2.) Use the Right Chemicals:
Be sure to use the right chemicals for cleaning and disinfecting. Using the wrong products can damage your belongings. NEVER mix chemicals unless the label instructs you to do so - many chemical combinations can be hazardous to your health. Each cleaning product is labeled, with the intended purpose and directions for use.
3.) High-Touch Areas:
High-touch areas should be at the top of your priority list when cleaning and disinfecting. High-touch areas include areas such as counter tops, light switches, door knobs, chairs, railings, telephones, keys, restroom surfaces, coffee pot handles/dispensers, etc...
4.) Hand Washing:
We cannot stress the importance of hand washing enough! Proper hand washing goes a long ways in preventing the unnecessary spread of germs. The CDC recommends a 5-step hand washing protocol: wet, lather, scrub, rinse and dry. Remember to scrub for at least 20 seconds and to clean in between your fingers and under your nails.
Professional Services:
If you have any questions, or would like to schedule professional cleaning and disinfecting, please call SERVPRO of East York at 717-665-2466.
We're Ready to Help After the Storm
4/22/2020 (Permalink)
The SERVPRO of East York team is ready to help after the storm!
Approximately 98% of all National, presidential-declared disasters are weather-related, leading to approximately 650 deaths and nearly $15 billion in damage each year. Severe weather can occur at any time, anywhere. On average, Americans cope with severe weather in the following capacity each year:
- 10,000 Severe Thunderstorms
- 5,000 Floods or Flash Floods
- 1,300 Tornadoes
- 2 Land-falling Hurricanes
------
Knowing the risks of severe weather, taking action, and setting a positive example are just a few steps you can take to be better prepared to save your life, while assisting in saving the lives of others:
---
KNOWING THE RISKS:
The first step to becoming weather-ready is to understand the type of hazardous weather that can affect where you live and work, and how the weather can impact you, your business, and your family. We recommend checking the weather forecast regularly, obtaining a NOAA Weather Radio, and learning about Wireless Emergency Alerts in your area. Severe weather comes in many forms, and your shelter plan should include all types of local hazardous scenarios.
---
TAKING ACTION:
Before The Storm
- Develop a communication plan.
- Build or purchase an emergency supply kit.
- Unplug electronic equipment before the storm arrives.
- Secure outdoor objects that could blow away or cause damage.
- Get inside a building, home, or hard-top vehicle (not a convertible).
- Shut windows, close blinds and curtains, shutter windows (if able), and secure outside doors.
- Store important documents and valuables in a safe, weather-resistant location.
During The Storm
- Use a battery-operated NOAA Weather Radio for updates from local officials.
- Avoid contact with electrical equipment or cords, including corded telephones.
- Unplug appliances and other electrical items. Power surges from lightning can cause serious damage.
- Avoid contact with plumbing and standing water. Water and bathroom fixtures can conduct electricity.
- Stay away from windows and doors.
---
SETTING A POSITIVE EXAMPLE: Once you have taken action to prepare for severe weather, share your story with family members, co-workers, and friends on social media. Your preparedness efforts may inspire others to do the same.

Providing Essential Service for Essential Workers
4/17/2020 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of East York is prepared to clean and disinfect any home or business!
During this unprecedented time, we would like to remind our customers that we are specialists in cleaning and disinfecting services. At SERVPRO of East York, we adhere to the highest cleaning and sanitation standards, and given our current environment, we are continuously improving the level of clean we provide.
SERVPRO of East York recently provided cleaning and disinfecting services to several buses at a local Law Enforcement facility. Vehicles that are used to provide essential services need to be cleaned and decontaminated to ensure members of our community are not exposed to any additional threats.
Inside the buses, our team of professionals made sure to vacuum all seats and floors. Seats that did not have cushions were also wiped with disinfectant. We wiped all non-carpeted flooring with a commercial-grade cleaner / degreaser, and ensured that all trash was removed from floors, consoles, and door compartments. We cleaned the consoles, steering wheels, door handles, radio microphones, and dashboards with a hospital-grade disinfectant.
After spraying the disinfectant directly on the surface areas, we thoroughly wiped off any excess spray. Because the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) encourages cleaning of high-touch surfaces, we paid particular attention to door handles and handles to the cabinets.
We then cleaned the Plexiglas doors with glass cleaner, checked to make sure trash did not need Sharps container, and swept and decontaminated the floor. After sweeping out dirt and debris, we sprayed the floor with disinfectant and let it sit for a several minutes before mopping with clean water.
SERVPRO of East York also knows it is important for drivers to have clear sight lines and the ability to use their mirrors effectively. We made certain that the windshields were free of bugs, and that debris was removed. All mirrors were wiped down with a glass cleaner, and the exterior of the vehicles were washed. We removed dirt and grime to project a clean image, and cleaned the tires, so they were free of mud and dirt.

What to Do After a Commercial Fire Damage Emergency
1/21/2020 (Permalink)
Melted water cooler from a commercial fire.
After Flames Close Your Business, Call SERVPRO for Fire Damage Restoration
Thousands of businesses are affected by commercial fire damage each year because of a wide range of causes. Whether it's a restaurant that encounters a fire, an office in a building that was affected by a nearby disaster, or a severe storm that sparks flames, such an event is never easy to deal with.
Few proprietors are prepared to grapple with the aftermath of a fire because it's not something that most business owners expect will happen to them. Entrepreneurs who suffer commercial fire damage may feel at a loss when it comes to picking up the pieces and resuming business as usual. Here are three key steps you should consider taking after a fire has shut down your business.
- Get in contact with your insurance company right away. Not only will this be one of the most relevant steps to getting back open and serving your customers, but your insurance company will also provide the funds needed to make repairs to your business. We know how to navigate the commercial claims process, and any repairs that we complete will meet or exceed your insurance provider's requirements. We do emphasize that we are not an insurance company.
- Secure the remaining equipment and property in your building. Unfortunately, commercial fire damage increases the likelihood of vandalism and theft, as your building will be left vulnerable and less secure. Patching up walls, doors, and windows, even temporarily, can go a long way towards preventing further problems. The experts at SERVPRO have the experience and tools needed to secure your business's exterior and interior quickly. As a result, your property will be safeguarded and any further damage to the building will be minimized.
- Be mindful of smoke damage. Even if it appears that your business was only minimally affected by commercial fire damage, the building likely has lingering smoke that will destroy your equipment, documents, and inventory over time. When you call SERVPRO, we'll thoroughly inspect your business for smoke damage and effectively clean it up, eliminate odors, and restore satisfactory indoor air quality.
The team at SERVPRO of East York County knows how devastating commercial fire damage can be, and we're committed to helping you get your business back up and running. To obtain a quote or get more information about our fire repair and restoration services, call us 24/7 at (717) 846-6100.
Conditions In York County Might Be Right For Mold
9/3/2019 (Permalink)
It’s estimated that more than 1 million types of mold exist, yet less than 10 percent have actually been named. This means mold is very common in both indoor and outdoor environments. While mold and humans can sometimes co-exist without issue, there are certain species of mold that can cause health effects for some people.
If the right conditions exist, mold will grow. Those conditions include:
- Water - Different mold types require varying amounts of liquid before growth begins.
- Temperature - Normal indoor temperatures will promote mold growth.
- Time - Initial mold colonizers can take hold within one day after being exposed to an adequate water supply.
Mold growth can occur in any home, so it’s important to keep an eye out for situations that might promote mold activity. Roof/chimney leaks, wet basements, or condensation from ducts that dampen surrounding insulation are just a few examples of issues that make a house a prime target for mold growth.
If you suspect mold in your home, call SERVPRO of East York to assess the situation. We have the knowledge, tools and track record to effectively remediate mold in your home or business.

Cold Temps=Cold Pipes
3/8/2019 (Permalink)
Give your pipes a helping hand this winter season.
If your pipes run through a cabinet or vanity open the doors to give your pipes some warmth from the warm temperature of the room. If there is no doors to open, just leave the water trickle from the faucet. The cost of the water running is a LOT lower then the cost of a frozen pipe being repaired.
If you would forget to leave the water trickle or a door open, here is what you can do to thaw the pipe.
Turn off the main shut-off valve. Use warm air from a hair dryer or space heater to melt the water frozen inside the pipe. NEVER leave the space heater unattended. After the pipe is thawed slowly turn the main shut-off back on. When the water is running throw the pipe check for any cracks or leaks which could of been caused by the freezing.
If you have a burst pipe, shut off your water and give us a call! We are here to help!
SERVPRO Helps Clean Up After Fire in Manheim
1/3/2019 (Permalink)
This damage was caused by a grease fire.
1/3/2019Nobody ever plans for a fire, but when one does happen, SERVPRO is here to help!
This loss was caused by a grease fire in a kitchen. Now, our natural instinct would be to use water for any fire, but avoid this practice with grease fires! This will just make matters worse.
Grease fires are caused when the cooking oil gets to hot and catches on fire. If you should find yourself in this predicament, turn off the heat and do the following:
- Cover with a metal lid, this will deprive the fire of oxygen it needs to burn. Do not use glass, it will shatter.
- For small fires, use baking soda.
- If available, use a kitchen fire extinguisher.
- If it becomes too much or out of control, get out of the house and call 911 immediately!
Safety is of utmost important. For any help with clean-up after, be sure to call SERVPRO!
SERVPRO removes mold from Quarryville Workshop
11/29/2018 (Permalink)
Mold takes root on a moist spot on a wooden ceiling.
Mold is never good news for anyone. We here at SERVPRO know this, but we are here to help!
In Quarryville, we received a call about a workshop with mold growing on the wood of the ceiling (pictured).
If left untreated, not only could the repairs cost the owner more than the mitigation, but it also could have significant impacts to their health.
The following are a few facts on mold and how to help control it.
- Mold is a necessary part of our environments ecosystem. Without it, organic matter would not decay and breakdown. However, our homes are not where we want to see mold!
- Mold needs 3 things to flourish: moisture, an organic food source, & the right temperature. In this case, there was moisture in the wood at the right temperature, leading to the aforementioned growth.
- Mold only needs 24-48 hours to grow! So, if you notice moisture anywhere it is best to dry it QUICKLY!
If there is mold in your home, shed, or anywhere on your property, call us at SERVPRO of Western Lancaster & East York @ (717) 665-1270. We will remove it "Like it never even happened"!

Six Signs Water Damage Is Ruining Your Foundation
3/2/2018 (Permalink)
Water Damage in East York County Can Be Restored by SERVPRO
Water damage may be fairly simple to spot, especially if you are a hands-on homeowner, who fixes and repairs things as they crop up. The problem is that water damage to foundations is not an easy water damaging problem to identify.
Nevertheless, the key to minimizing the extent of the damage is always to spot it quickly and address it as soon as possible. How are you supposed to achieve this if you don’t know that there is water damage in the first place? This guide, provided by SERVPRO, to some of the most common symptoms of water damage within foundations will help you spot any problem areas.
Symptom One: Water Below Ground
If you are routinely dealing with standing water in the basement, you are probably getting a little stressed out. As a consolation, however, it does mean that you can be reasonably sure of a foundation problem. Standing water only accumulates and sits in a basement if drainage systems are not functioning properly.
Symptom Two: Overly Damp Soil
If you speculate that there could be an issue with moisture, take a look at the soil around the foundations of the property. If it is unusually wet (even after days without rain), there is a good chance that groundwater is seeping into the foundation.
Symptom Three: Water in the Crawlspace
Standing water or condensation and moisture building up within a crawlspace is a pretty good sign that something is wrong with the foundation, circulation of air, lack of adequate insulation, or burst pipe. If it is too damp in this area, the quality of the air in your house can decline, and it may give off a musty odor.
Symptom Four: Sagging and Bowing Floors
A lot of homeowners walk up and down uneven floors for years before they spot a problem. You can test the level of your own with nothing more than a small rubber ball. Unless you know of a reason the foundation is or could be unlevel and not caused by water damage, imbalances should be checked out immediately. They can indicate soil erosion due to water.
Symptom Five: Slimy Patches Outside
When the water from rains and storms is draining away from the property in a secure and efficient manner, it never spends enough time close to the building to have a lasting impact. On the other hand, if groundwater is pooling, you may be able to spot slimy and moldy patches on the outer walls of your home.
Symptom Six: Mal-functioning Doorframes or windows
This might sound like a surprising sign, but if your doorframes used to open and close correctly, but have recently started to stick, the problem could be moisture related. It may be a sign that the doorframes have begun to warp, from excessive water absorption.

Dryer Ducts — Often Ignored Until It's Too Late
3/1/2018 (Permalink)
Some of the lint that accumulated in one dryer duct.
What can happen if you forget about regular duct cleaning?
In the hustle and bustle of daily life it’s easy to forget about small, regular things that need maintenance or cleaning. After month of talking to home and business owners, I’ve realized that far too many people ignore their ducts entirely until the ducts become so clogged they think their dryer is broken. Those who think their dryer is broken are the fortunate ones—the unfortunate ones often experience something far worse, a structure fire from which it can take months to rebuild and recover.
Even though it may seem arduous to some, most homes only need to have their ducts cleaned annually or semi-annually—depending on amount of dryer usage—usually in the spring and/or fall.
As you can see in the photo, taken at an apartment complex in which the previous owners ignored this vital cleaning for years, this building was at sever risk for a fire. Furthermore, this issue caused them to not only go through dryers often but also waste energy as tenants were running dryer cycle times of over 4 hours a load! I only wish we could’ve gotten a picture of it all to demonstrate how serious the issue was as our crews pulled and vacuumed out over 3-5 cubic feet of compacted lint from each dryer duct! Thankfully, the new management was more diligent.
What you should know about Mold Remediation
3/1/2018 (Permalink)
We remediated a home located in the East York. Mold growth started in the attic and the spores spread throughout the home. Quality air tests, dry ice blasting and cleaning put this home back into a safe environment.
Mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours!
Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:
- Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
- Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
- Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
- Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
- Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
- Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Sprinkler Malfunction in York County
2/6/2018 (Permalink)
Flooded classroom after a sprinkler malfunction.
A malfunction in the sprinkler system of your business could flood your building and result in thousands (or tens of thousands) of dollars in damages. Thankfully, this York County day care facility called in SERVPRO of East York and Western Lancaster Counties to save the day. With additional help from SERVPRO of Hershey, our expert production staff was able to extract all the water and begin the drying process to minimize business interruption.
When it comes to such losses, rapid response is crucial to remove the water and limit the amount of damage it can cause. If the water were left to sit idle, within a few hours the damage to the walls and flooring could’ve been irreversible and would’ve turned into a long construction project. However, through swift action, much of the flooring and walls were saved permitting the facility to reopen with only one business day of closure.

When a fire happens, we can help

Ceiling after fire in attic space.
Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.
Smoke and soot facts:
- Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
- Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
- The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.
Different Types of Smoke
There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of East York will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:
Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber
- Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood
- Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
- Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Pipe Bursts? Water damage? What you should know.
11/10/2017 (Permalink)
Don't let broken pipes leaving you hanging around.
According to Insure.com, water damage is among the most common causes for homeowners' insurance claims--and one of the biggest sources of confusion. If a flooding river inundates your home, your insurance is unlikely to cover the damage. But if the flood comes from within the home itself, the result of a burst pipe, you can breathe easier: Your policy may probably will cover the damage to your property.
In general, water damage from a burst pipe inside your home should be covered by a standard homeowners' insurance policy. If an outside pipe bursts and causes damage, that should be covered, too, though you must be able to demonstrate that the damage did indeed come from the burst pipe. If the insurer concludes that poor drainage--a non-covered maintenance problem--was the real culprit, your claim may be denied.
The New Springetts Castle Park
5/31/2017 (Permalink)
Helping within your community is fun!
Thankfully, buildings affected by fire, water, and mold aren’t the only places to which we go—when possible, we also like to get involved within the community. Recently, I was given the opportunity to volunteer for Springettsbury Township Parks and Rec assembling the new playground which is a replacement for the classic wood playground many of you enjoyed with your families throughout its nearly 3 decade life.
Having the chance to work with the highly-experienced team from General Recreation, Inc. was a real pleasure and a treasured experience. I only wish I could’ve helped more—and had the foresight to wear sunscreen on the sunniest, hottest day of the month.
While I, like many others, was sad to hear the old wooden playground was dismantled, the new playground has a fantastic layout and seems like it’ll provide lots of fun for a new generation of families to enjoy for decades to come.

Factors to consider when faced with a biohazard cleanup
3/31/2017 (Permalink)
If you are faced with a biohazard cleanup, our professional, compassionate staff can guide you through the process.
If you are faced with a biohazard cleanup, such as a trauma scene, sewage backup, or hoarding situation, here are some key factors to consider:
- Avoid exposure to any contaminants present. There are serious health risks associated with exposure to blood, bodily fluids, animal waste, sewage, and other biohazardous materials. Treat all potentially hazardous materials as if they are contaminated.
- Assess ways to secure your personal safety and contain the situation, such as turning off the HVAC system and avoiding standing water or sagging ceilings.
- Before attempting to clean up a trauma scene yourself, particularly when it involves a loved one, consider the long-term mental and emotional consequences of doing so. The cleanup process can be emotional and traumatic in itself. Biohazard cleanup professionals are trained to deal with trauma situations with compassion and discretion.
- If you would like assistance with a biohazard cleanup, our trained professionals can assess the situation, provide a no-cost estimate, and clean the affected areas and dispose of the waste in accordance with federal and state regulations.
Spring Cleaning Chore Checklist

Complete Idiot's Guide to Getting Organized
March winds blow, telling us that Spring is on the way!
Warming breezes scour the last of winter from house and garden. Spring rain awakens the earth and calls forth new life.
Meet the rising sap with a new broom. Spring clean indoors and out to prepare home and hearth for the return of warm weather.
Our Spring cleaning chore checklist will help you take care of important seasonal chores and welcome Spring to an organized home.
Around The House:
- Schedule a family garage clean-out. Create efficient storage for sporting goods, camping equipment, recreational vehicles, and garden tools. You'll have the jump on summer fun!
- Inspect, clean and repair outdoor furniture.
- Tour house exterior and grounds. Make a list of any needed seasonal maintenance.
- Inspect the roof for winter damage: leaks, missing or broken shingles or tiles. Arrange for any needed repairs early; roofing contractors can be hard to find during summer's construction season.
- Use a sunny Saturday to scrape, prime and paint peeling spots on trim or woodwork. You'll protect wood against Summer's heat and moisture--and prevent a more difficult paint job come fall.
- Clear away any remaining dead foliage and weeds from beds and lawn. New growth will be protected from damage or disease.
- Begin major Spring landscaping projects. Spring's the time to put in shrubs and trees, but check with your local extension office for specific planting recommendations for your area.
The Inside Story:
- Changing seasons, changing clothes. Hold a family wardrobe check as you bring out warm-weather clothing. Sort winter clothing for discards and donations before you store.
- Hold a garage sale! Declutter house and garage to turn trash into cash. Build your yard sale savvy here.
- Pick a weekend and enlist the family for Spring cleaning. Many hands make light work! Reward the team with dinner at a pizza parlor.
- Wash windows inside and out.
- While at the window area, check drapes and window treatments. Vacuum any dust; send dirtier drapes to the cleaners.
- Move furniture and vacuum beneath it.
- Arrange for a spring inspection of cooling systems. Don't wait for the first hot day! Air conditioning firms will give better service when they're not busy.
- When the weather warms, deactivate heat system humidifiers. Check the system manual for instructions on how to power down for the summer.
- Drain sediment from hot water heaters.

CHRISTMAS - A time for reflection
12/21/2016 (Permalink)
Warm thoughts this Christmas season
Christmas is two worlds – the visible and the invisible, the endless excess and the spirit of Christmas. We like a little excess and flamboyance, but sometimes find that the best way to avoid the commercialism of Christmas is to infuse the excess with the true spirit of the celebration. Excess doesn't mean spending lots of money. There is nothing cheaper or funnier than seeing who can make the longest paper chain On wet December weekends.
The team of SERVPRO of Western Lancaster and East York took the time to slow down and celebrate the year that was. The business of specialized cleaning is not everyone's cup of tea and we see customers at their lowest point, when they feel like the world around them is crumbling. Our team of dedicated certified production techs work to make everyone of these people feel like they are in good hands and all will be well. Christmas time for us is a time to thank our staff for the work that they do. There are times that we are not as appreciated. There are times that we have to take on the stress of the clients. We do it with a smile and wish all a very MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY HOLIDAYS. Hope the New Year brings love Joy and laughter with your near ones and family.

All You Need to Know About Flood Damage

Recent Mold Remediation in Mount Gretna/Lebanon Home
5/23/2016 (Permalink)
This basement was cleared of mold by our professional team. Pictures above show both before and after of the ceiling.
We recently remediated a home loacted in the Mount Gretna/Lebanon area. Mold growth started in the basement and the spores spread throughtout the home.
